I recently made a fairly painful observation about travel finances.

I've always assumed that I'd take a whole year off to travel the world at some point in the semi-near future. I knew it would cost a lot, but I never technically did the math.

However, a couple of weeks ago, I was reading a book about a family that spent a year traveling, and when they discussed their food budget, I thought it would be interesting to figure out what it would cost to travel for a year.

I added it up as if I had an average daily budget of $50 total for food, lodging, shopping, etc. (Which is cutting it low, I'm sure. Of course, in many places I could get by for less than $10 per day, but in others like Paris and Beijing, it would cost much, much more than $50)

Somehow, it has never hit me before that even if I was only spending $50/day, a year of traveling would cost $18,000.

More than worth the cost, I'm sure, but where the heck do I get $18,000 when I still owe $12,000 on my car?? And yet, I can't keep putting the traveling off forever! I'll never be as young and free of responsibilities as I am now. And yet those very qualities keep me away from my dream.
