101 in 1001 Warp-Up: What's a nice way to say "Epic Fail"?

The first of my two current 101 in 1001 lists has come to an end, as of yesterday! So, so much crazyness happened in my life over the course of these 1001 days that I didn't get anywhere near as many accomplished as I would have expected. Between missing months of work being sick and having zero money for most of those two and a half-ish years, the deck was definitely stacked against me.

I don't want to discredit the ones I DID accomplish though, so let's say a big WOO! for those, and see what I can learn from the ones that didn't work out.

Start Date: March 17, 2008
End Date: December 13, 2010

Total Completed List Items: 40

1. Take photos every day for a year

Not even close on this one. As much as I love these "every day for a year" type of goals, I don't think they are a good fit for me. What happens, for instance, if you miss a day? Do you start over, or just keep going? I think that on my next list, I'll replace this kind of goal with something more concrete and reachable, like "Take 100 great photos of my cats." It still reaches the heart of the goal, which is to take more photos, but with less structure.

2. Go horseback riding

I am so sad I never got to do this! I was just thinking last night that my beloved horse Emmett that I bought when he was 3 years old is 15 now. I miss him! Katie and I talked about a few different places to ride in Orlando, but I never had the $50+ dollars to spare. Maybe I can find someone who will let me ride for free?

3. Do another Blogathon

Sadly, the Blogathon did not take place this year!

4. Enjoy Afternoon Tea at the Grand Floridian (again)- Complete Oct 1, 2009! I should blog about it, it was much fun!

Oops, I never did blog about this. The Garden View Tea Room has become a bit of a tradition for Katie & Me. We go at least a couple of times a year to stuff ourselves on Eros tea and scones and such, and talk for hours. The last time we went, we ended up getting into a conversation with the manager, and when he learned we were semi-regulars, he asked if we would mind testing some new teas they were considering adding to a seasonal menu. Um, of course we wouldn't mind!

The manager kept bringing out more and more cups of tea until the table was literally covered in cups, and we had a crazy and hilarious sugar high. Our waitress even took pity on my poor Disney cast memberness and snuck me some extra scones and cream to take home with me. LOVE HER.

Katie with some of our many, many teacups!

If you have never done an afternoon tea, I highly recommend it. Although we sometimes do jeans and t-shirts, it is an awesome excuse to pull out girly dresses and cute shoes when we're in the mood. Plus, scones are awesome.

5. Ride a Segway

No luck here, and as I am not currently employed by Disney, chances are mighty slim until I move back to FL and get a job there again! Unless I just go on vacation and do the free ride at Epcot!

6. Take a yoga class

See also: Lack of money. Sad.

7. Kiss someone new *complete*

I am not going to go into details here, but I will say that I kissed both the man I was thinking of when I added this item, and another guy that I totally did not expect. Hooray for kisses!

8. Buy a teapot

No teapot yet. I have my eye on a really cute one from the Japan pavilion at Epcot. Someday!

9. Behind the Seeds tour at Epcot’s Land pavilion

Not yet, again!

10. Eat crème brulee *complete* Thanks, Epcot!

11. Try 30 new things in 30 days

I may or may not have completed this one, byt I didn't keep track well enough to feel right about crossing it off. I would like to try again, though. Going out of your way to try new things is so much fun! You start seeking out experiences, noticing options you have always overlooked. What happens if I take a different route to work, try a different coffee order, wear my hair like this instead of that? I had so much fun grocery shopping because I actually stopped and looked at things on the shelves that I normally walked straight past, in a search for new things to try. I hugely recommend this one, it will seriously enrich your everyday life!

12. Visit Coronado Springs and Caribbean Beach, so that I will have officially been to every WDW Resort (And Fort Wilderness! I forgot it!) *complete* (It wasn't on my original list since it didn't exist yet when I wrote it, but I also visited the new Bay Lake Towers at the Contemporary with Megan, and Kidani Village at DAK-Lodge.)

13. Try the school bread from Norway at Epcot that everyone raves about.

Fail! I always seem to either be eating something else at Epcot or have zero money to spend!

14.Clean up my Favorites folder in IE. I have SO much stuff in there! Sort through, organize, clean out the sites that no longer exist or I no longer need, rediscover stuff I forgot about.

Given that the computer I originally wrote this list on was stolen and I had to start all over on a new laptop, and then ANOTHER new laptop when THAT one was stolen too, you could technically say that I REALLY cleaned out my bookmarks! They are still a giant mess now, though. (And I have switched to Chrome.) I don't think I put enough effort into this to warrant crossing it off.

15. Blog every day for a month

Never happened.

16. Take an American Tribal Style bellydance class

See lack of money again!

17. Find at least one thing each day that makes me happy and record it everyday for a year- I saw this on someone’s list at 43things.com, and thought it sounded very good.

I didn't do this, but I am working on a list of 1000 things that make me happy!

18. Attend the Orlando Fringe Festival *Complete*

We went in 2009, and had a great time! I think we only saw 2 shows (Or was it 3?) but I would certainly go again!

19. Visit London- I’ve been drawn to this city for as long as I can remember. Bill Bryson has a theory that everyone has numerous "homes" in the world, and we travel because we are in search of them. (Oh man, I think it was Bryson... it may have been Steinbeck!)

I obviously did not do this, or you would have heard about it!

20. Do another "26 Things" photo project

21. Get a tattoo-I’ve been trying to decide what I want to get for ages now, so if I don’t make up my damn mind within the next few years, I am going to kick myself. I might let you kick me, too.

Still haven't done this! I have finally decided on designs, though! I am determined to get the heart suitcase on my ankle before our Canada trip next summer!

22. Dentist! I have several things that I need to have done, and will finally have insurance soon! *Complete*

I still need a ton of things taken care of, but my lack of insurance for the past 6 months has made that really hard! Even when I had dental insurance I never had $50 to get a filling done. I have been missing a filling that fell out since Feb 2008! How insane is that?

23. Try the Rooibos "Miracle tea" at Animal Kingdom *complete*

I drug myself to DAK when I had bronchitis because hot tea sounded AMAZING. I can't say it helped, but I'm glad I tried it!

24. Go to Jellyrolls

I still haven't been!

25. Catch a show at Comedy Warehouse (Um, crap. It closed!)

Closing the clubs at PI = Disney's WORST MISTAKE EVER. I will never, ever forgive the closing of the Adventurers Club. Ever.

26. Go to the FL Keys

Still not yet!

27. Eat pancakes at that place Katie told me about, the name of which I am too lazy to look up.

I don't even remember what the place was! I just remember that they bring you the batter and you make the pancakes at your own table!

28. Take photos in a photo booth. Must be one that prints out a strip of photos, no lame 5x7s or anything.

Nope! Technically, Katie and I *DID* take photos in a photobooth when we were at The Social to see Jonathan Coulton! We totally cheated though, because we used my camera instead of actually paying, so I am not counting it. I want the cute little strip of photos, damnit!

29. Slow dance-*complete*

30. Finish up my trip report on the DIS boards. Preferably in *less* than 1000 days. (COMPLETE! 9/2010)

31. Eat at the Sci-Fi Dine In at Hollywood Studios. *complete*

Their oreo cookie milkshakes are to die for!

32. Try something new at Starbucks *complete*

33. Star Wars Weekends! (Crap, I totally missed 09! And 2010. EPIC FAIL.)

34. See a space shuttle launch.

Still hasn't happened! The one time I was actually awake for and aware of a launch at the same time, it was way too overcast to see the shuttle from Orlando.

35. Take a non-bellydance dance class

Not yet

36. Do a 40s/50s Pin-up girl style photoshoot (not nude, just cute!)

One of my favorite movies!

38. Read something by Jane Austen

39. Get a massage

Never got a professional one, so not counting it.

40. Go to I-Bar *complete* Hehehe, magical!

41. Read a Shakespeare play that I haven’t read yet, or see one of his plays that I haven’t seen (Both! Read Hamlet, watched Two Gentlemen of Verona, 3/2010)

42. Go on a cruise

I find it so sad that I had the opportunity to go on cruises for SO VERY CHEAP while I was working for Disney, but never got to because I could barely even buy food, let alone a vacation.

43. Try a new fruit or vegetable *complete* Jackfruit is... interesting.

44. Stay up all night having a great conversation

Nope, sadly.

45. Buy a reusable grocery bag *complete* I think I have 3!

46. Visit a new state *Complete!* Drove through Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama on my way from FL to MO. I made sure to stop at least once in each state I hadn't been to.

47. Pay off at least one credit card

48. Back up my laptop

49. Watch Season 1 of Heroes *complete* Thanks for lending it, Katie!

50. Catch up on Season 1 of Pushing Daisies *complete* Thanks to Netflix!

51. Read 10 books recommended by friends (Start leaving suggestions in the comments!)

I don't think I read any books recommended by friends over this tiem period.

52. Find out what my credit score is (Most likely it is something like 2.)

If it was 2 when this list started, it is probably now like .027.

53. Do volunteer work through VoluntEars (or in general)

Nope, I suck.

54. Eat/Drink at Raglan Road Irish Pub (preferably on a night with live entertainment)

Still haven't been!

55. See Todd
There’s something wrong about not seeing one of your very best friends for over 4 years!

I haven't posted about it here, because it's sort of private, but I really, really wish I could have found a way to do this years ago, because his health has gone so far down hill that it is not longer really an option. It breaks my heart.

56. See 20 live bands (Seeing Black Ship Sky 20 times does not count, sadly.)

1. Black Ship Sky 2. Built to be Broken 3. Ambertone 4. Johnny Plastic and the Rubber Band 5. Soulswitch 6.Weszt 7. KC and the Band 8. Andy Matchett 9. AM Conspiracy 10. Sugar Free Music 11. Afterglow Radio 12. The Broken Inn 13. Godpawn 14. Traverser 15. Orange Avenue 16. Mr. Bella 17. Lost in Chaos 18. Shut up and Dance 19. Needham and Weep 20. Falling for Sarah

58. Read 100 books

59. Actually use the pool at my apartment complex *complete*

60. Actually use the gym at my apartment complex (HAH!) *complete*-more than once, even!

61. Finally read Kingdom by the Sea by Paul Theroux (this appears on every one of my lists as a sort of running joke- for some reason, I NEVER get around to reading this book!)

I actually got a few chapters in before getting distracted by something else. GRR, will I never finish this??

62. Go to Universal Studios

Nope, and I even had free tickets once.

63. Visit Islands of Adventure

No, but I actually want to go now that they have the Harry Potter area! It looks awesome!

68. Try ice wine *complete* Yay for food & wine fest 08!

I walked part of it one day, but it started to rain and I had to turn back. Fail!

70. Read "Walking in this World" (the sequel to Artist’s Way) *complete*

71. Do the Sharon Kihara tribal dance dvd that has been on my bookshelf for months now *complete*- Picked up some fun new bits and pieces!

72. Have at least 5 friends teach me to do something they’re good at (Volunteers?)

73. Meet someone I admire

Didn't happen.

74. Get a great fortune cookie fortune

I kept meaning to buy some fortune cookies and never did!

75. Attend a nerd convention of some sort

76. Actually write morning pages every day for a month.

I came close, but never hit a solid month.

77. Either play Star Wars Galaxies or Matrix Online again, or try WoW or LOTRO

No $ and way too crappy of an internet connection for about 20 of the months.

78. Attend some form of religious service- preferably one I’m unfamiliar with.

Nope. Oops.

79. "Go to one of those target practice gun shooting things" (Katie and I agreed that this should go on the list with the exact wording in which it came about.)

No, but I still think Katie and I attempting to shoot things would be HI-larious.

80. Actually wear heels somewhere. (Bonus points for not falling over!) *complete*

81. Take a class at Ilham’s bellydance studio

82. Take a burlesque dance class

Neither of these. :( And now burlesque classes will probably get super-busy because of the movie.

83. Visit home- *Complete!* 1/15/10

84. Have photos I’ve taken published

Someone buy some photos from me already!

85. Do some kind of acting, even if it’s just a job as an extra. It’s been fo-ever!

You know, it probably shouldn't count, but since I haven't counted any of the other borderline ones, I am going to give myself a break on this one. I was in a training video for our supervisors at work where I had to pretend I didn't know how to accept a gift card. I never saw the video, which is probably a very, very good thing, but I like to believe I was splendid.

86. Flower & Garden festival @ Epcot *complete*

87. Food & Wine fest @ Epcot (again!) *complete* Try at least 10 things (not ALL wine…) Started 09/09- So far the Irish cheese plate with kerrygold butter, brown bread, and apple chutney, and cheese soup from Canada, which I cant count since I've had it so many times!, Goats Do Roam Red and Rose from South Africa, Airship Red from New York, Sangria from Morocco, Bailey's chocolate ganache from Ireland, Escargot from France, Praligne bread pudding from New Orleans

96. See wild manatees (Or, as I call them in my conversation with Katie, "REAL manatees!")

Umm, yeah, I didn't do any of those things.

97. Dine and dance on the tables at Taverna Opa *complete*

98. Enjoy the food and art at Café Tu Tu Tango *complete*

99. Buy a piece of original art

I actually e-mailed Lucy Knisley about doing a watercolor comic-type sketch of Tallulah, but I haven't had the spare cash to pay for one yet. I still like the idea, though!

100. Buy/acquire a small digital camera that I can toss in my purse for easy everyday access. (My good camera is a little bulky to carry *all* the time)

Oh, how I wish!

101. Post blog updates about all of the above items!

I posted about a lot of them as they happened, and am counting this wrap-up post to make this complete!

The Bonus Items:

102. Celebrate the end of 1001 days on Monday, Dec 13, 2010

103. Write a new list to start over!

104. Donate $1 to charity for every item not completed

I can't do the donation right now, because I literally have 86 cents in my bank account, but I will be donating a TON of stuff left over from our yard sale to charity soon, so I am hoping that balances things out.

I'm not going to write a new list quite yet, because I still have my OTHER 101 list going on, and I need to decide if I want to stick with that, or write a whole new one and scrap that one, or have 2 going on at once again. Decisions, decisions!

If you would like to know more about 101 in 1001, check out the Day Zero Project!

I've never seen the end of 1001 in 101. So, congrats on doing as much as you did!

Are you not in Florida anymore? I like in South Florida :)

You did a lot! I can't find my list... I think it's lost on Myspace, somewhere. I think I averaged about 40, too. So many of mine involved going to Europe, which, in hindsight, was a little ambitious. :P
