Kupcake Killer Review & Giveaway!

A while back while I was poking around on Etsy, I came across something that blew my mind: Cupcakes in a JAR. Everyone knows that putting food on a stick makes it awesome, but putting it in a jar makes it both awesome AND super-portable!

As if the jar thing wasn't cool enough, I then read the flavor list. Smores? Chocolate Mudslide? PANCAKE? I immediately contacted Brittany, the owner of Kupcake Killer and asked if I could come live in her kitchen and eat all day. Instead, she offered to send me some to try out! NOM!

I stalked the mailman daily until it arrived, picking up the habit of gazing out the living room window while holding a fork and a glass of milk. My jars of awesomeness actually arrived the day before I left for Canada, which was PERFECT because I was so super stressed out that a good pig-out on chocolatey goodness was exactly what I needed!

The jars I got were awesome! The packaging is really cute, and being in a jar kept them totally fresh and moist, no getting dry or stale during the trip. I loved the layering of cake and frosting, so you don't run out of frosting after the first few bites!

Brittany was awesome enough to answer my questions about her magical cupcakes, her inspiration and other general need-to-know stuff!

*How long have you been in the baking business, and how did you get started?
I've always loved to bake! It's something that my grandma liked to do and I always liked "helping" her as a kid, so I think that those experiences rubbed off on me. However, I really didn't get super serious about baking and sharing my goodies with people (other than family and close friends) until about a year and half ago. I really have my tattoo artist [Graham Bradford at Pain and Wonder in Athens, GA] to thank for that as strange as it may sound. He actually gave me the final push that I needed to venture out and see how others would perceive my desserts. It took that one person who didn't know me very well at the time to say, "These are good, you should sell them" to make me realize that my family and friends had been right all along, and that maybe I had a chance. I never imagined that I would have the demand for them, or that I would have people from other states want them. I think the hardest thing for me to overcome was the fact that not everyone is going to like or appreciate my cupcakes. I'm still telling myself that if someone doesn't like them that it's ok, everyone has their own opinion about everything and that's ok because at the end of the day they are just that...opinions!

*I'm a little in love with the idea of your cupcakes in a jar! How did those come about?
I actually didn't think about doing the cupcakes in a jar until I sat down and tried to figure out a way that I could ship my cupcakes to others. We did some experimenting and that's when the cupcakes in a jar were born! I love the look of mason jars and the fact that it allows the product to be shipped and get to where it needs to be in one piece. It also allows customers to send their friends and families gifts and keep them fresh!

*You have some seriously fun flavors, like Pancake and Monster. How do you come up with your flavors? What inspires you?
Some of the best cupcake ideas come from things that you already love. I love pancakes so I thought why not try to make a cupcake that taste like one! I do have to say that the Monster flavor is my most asked about flavor...people always want to know if it really taste like Monster and it does. I always tell people that you HAVE to be a fan of Monster in the first place because it is certainly an acquired taste. My tattoo artist loves Monster and asked me one day if I thought I could make them into cupcakes. It took tons test runs but I finally have the recipe down pat. He is the only one to this day that has had them and he said he liked them. I don't know if I will ever get anyone else ordering them but they defiantly are inquired about almost daily!

*What are your most popular flavors? Are they also your favorites?
My best sellers are {Londyn}Double chocolate cupcakes with buttercream frosting topped with sprinkles, {Lolli}Double chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese frosting topped with white chocolate, {Red Velvet}Traditional red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting, {Pumpkin Patch} Pumpkin spice cupcakes with cinnamon buttercream frosting and {Snow White} Apple spice cupcakes with maple buttercream frosting. {Londyn} is my favorite as well as my daughter's (it's named after her). My fiance on the other hand loves {Pumpkin Patch} but only gets to have them in the fall. But, I do find that my personal favorite is a best seller.

*Have you ever tried out a combination of flavors or just a project in general that sounded great in theory, but turned out to be an epic fail?
This has happened a few times! It is frustrating when it's happening but when I look back on it, it's funny! My favorite epic fail was the time I had the bright idea that I wanted to try and make Kool-Aid cupcakes...now I know what you must be thinking...that can't be that hard?! I wanted to do the strawberry lemonaid effect just using Kool-Aid. I could have sworn it was going to be delicious but when I got the batter made the smell literally made me sick! I still decided to bake them and that the smell may go away once they cooked (it didn't). I even had my sister come over and try them out and she looked at me and said this is disgusting and I had to agree. I have yet to try and work on the recipe ever again so I defiantly put that in the FAIL pile.

*What makes you different from other bakers?
One of the things that I think make me stand out from the crowd is the fact that I make everything from scratch. I don't use anything from a box...I just love making things homemade. I like that I know what is in my cupcakes and they are not packed with preservatives and other junk I can't pronounce. I come up with all my recipes and if that means I have to trial run a recipe 50 times before it's perfect that's fine by me. I don't care what anyone may say--you CAN taste the difference between homemade and mass produced and if you cut corners then you will end up with results that show!

*Other than yummy baked goods, what makes you happy?
Lots of things...My daughter, my family, friends, cupcakes, baking, embroidery, reading, crocheting, candy, gumball machines, skeleton keys, Geocaching, tattoos, annoyingly adorable things, origami, castles, vintage jewelry, zombies, video games, music, hot tea, crafts and anything carnival/circus related.

*Are there any new flavors or ideas you're looking forward to trying soon? (I vote for a Cadbury Egg cupcake!)
The Cadbury Egg would be an amazing idea and something I will defiantly look into next Easter. I constantly have ideas for new cupcakes and my "to try" list is massive. I'm a huge fan of hot tea so I'm working on doing a green tea cupcake with honey buttercream frosting. I always like for people to give me ideas for new cupcakes to work on. I just finished the Orange Creamsicle cupcake and it's one of my new favorites for summer.

*Can I come live in your kitchen and eat all day?
Yes, only if you promise to do the dishes! :-)

What is even better than me getting to sit around and eat cupcakes out of jars?? Brittany has been awesome enough to offer one of my readers a large Cupcake in a Jar in your choice of flavor! Are you drooling yet?

To enter to win a jar of awesomeness of your very own, just visit the Kupcake Killer blog tell me which flavor (list is in the sidebar) makes your mouth water!
