This post brought to you by T.G.I. FRiDAY'S. All opinions are 100% mine.
Those of you who've followed my blog for very long know that I'm not really a fan of cooking, and I'm way too poor/cheap to go to restaurants very often. I tend to get stuck in a rut with the same easy to prepare meals, but every now and then I get a craving for something new to change things up a bit.
Last week I got a coupon in the mail to try out T.G.I. FRiDAY’S “Entrées for One”, a new line of frozen meals. These are totally different from the T.G.I Friday's frozen appetizers you may have seen in the store before, they include entrees like Grilled Chicken Mac & Cheese, Sizzling Steak Fajitas and Cajunj-Style Chicken Alfredo. I was a little wary of how much work might go into making these, but according to the info on their site, most of them go from package to plate in about 5 or 6 minutes. Not bad!
There are a total of 9 varieties available, but finding any of them became a bit of a challenge. My local grocery store didn't carry them, and neither did the store in the next town over . I finally found them at a Target about 40 minutes away, and did a celebratory victory dance. My first pick was the Sizzling Chicken Fajitas, and I was in luck that the store had them! Yay!
I was surprised to discover that you microwave this, I was expecting to cook it in a skillet! Bascally you just pop it in the microwave for 2 minutes, stir, then microwave 2 more minutes. The directions say to microwave the tortilla packet, too, but microwaved tortillas sounded like a disaster waiting to happen, so I heated them in a skillet while the fajita fillings microwaved.
Although these are called "Entrees for one", we aren't the "stuff yourself till you fall over and die" types, so there was more than enough food in the meal for 2 people. T.G.I. Friday's asked that I include my husband's opinion of the meal, but since they seem to have forgotten to send a coupon for a free husband with the meal coupon they sent, I instead called upon the house's resident male (You guys know him as BC) to be my taste tester. He was a big fan of the chicken, even though he usually doesn't eat spicy things. He probably would have eaten like half my meal if I'd let him.
(Man, now that I think about it, , I hope they didn’t actually send me a husband separately and he’s been sitting in a box in my garage that UPS dropped off and I didn’t notice all this time!)
What did I think? For a microwaved meal, it was pretty good. I don't like peppers and onions and such, so I piled all of those into the fajitas I gave my mom (There are 3 tortillas, so she had 2, I had 1) and made my own with just the chicken and cheesy rice. It was quite a bit spicier than I expected, but pretty tasty. The cheese was a little rubbery and the beans didn't taste like they'd been cooked quite enough, but it still felt more like "real food" than most microwave meals. I might pick one up again in the future when I need a change of pace.
T.G.I. Fridays also has a Fun Freezer contest going on right now where you can submit a photo of your decorated freezer for a chance to win some snazzy prizes!
