Thrifty Thursday!

I've been in the mood to check out some thrift stores lately, so I thought I'd make a little series of it! (Or, at least I will if you guys like it. No point putting in all that work if it's boring to read!) I can only imagine this will be much more interesting when I get back to Orlando, where thrift stores are both more abundant and more interesting, but for now I'll just work with what I've got!  I'm hoping to pick up a few thrifty shopping tips to pass on, and have reviews of thrift shops available for anyone who is searching for them!

Today I hit the Christian Associates thrift store in Branson West, which is about 5 miles from where I'm currently living. Branson West is a buzzing metropolis with a population of 408.  No, not 408,000... 408. Fo' real. I've stopped in this particular shop a couple of times before, but I don't think I've ever bought anything other than a paperback or three.

I checked out the store's webpage, but their calendar of sales/discounts hasn't been updated since February.  Kinda frustrating!  I also found them on FB, though, and it looks like they occasionally post about sales there, so I'll keep an eye on it.

I stole this pic from their FB to give you an idea of what the store looks like!

So, here's my question. I always see people talking/blogging/etc about all these amazing clothes and accessories and things they find at thrift stores, but I rarely have much luck.  For instance, shoes always seem to look like this:

Um, no.  Am I just shopping in the wrong places?

So, what DID I end up with?

Dress- $4. This was originally from Dress Barn, and is just the teeniest bit too big on me, but otherwise fits surprisingly well.  (I think this was the first time I've ever tried anything on in a thrift store!) Knowing Dress Barn's prices, I'd guess it was originally around $40. I have zero idea what kind of shoes to wear with it. but it seems like an easy Spring/Summery dress to just throw on when I want to look pulled together with zero effort.

Belt- 50 cents.

Obviously not the ideal belt for this dress, but at least it adds a little shape, and I have plenty of other things I can wear it with!

Bowl- 25 cents. I always need more bowls for the cats' food, and I found a cute little plain white bowl the perfect size! (Not pictured, because it's currently full of cat food and I'm too lazy to make it look pretty.  Cat food is gross-looking.)

Brown Glass- 25 cents. I recently got a cute blue decorative glass tumbler thing at Michaels for a buck, and I've been looking for a couple of others to stick next to it.  This seemed perfect!

Total Spent- $5.

I have to say, the cashier annoyed the crap out of me.  She must have been new, because she kept having to stop and think about what everything cost and what to punch into the register. No big deal, everyone is new at some point, but the way she wadded up my dress before sticking it in the bag and didn't wrap my breakable stuff in anything didn't make me happy.

I had picked up a framed cat print in the housewares section, because I thought it might be amusing to start a little wall gallery of crazy cat lady artwork. It didn't have a price tag on it, so I asked the cashier, and after a second, she suggested $1.50.  Are you kidding me, lady? When I said no really quickly, she offered 75 cents, but I was still thinking like a quarter, so alas, kitty stayed at the shop. (But now I really kind of do want to create a quirky wall of cat photos, like what people with families do with family pictures.)

Overall, it was an ok trip, but nothing fantastic. I prefer stores where items are priced by quality vs. item (like when every shirt is $2.) Their prices were a little high in general- $4 felt like a lot for the dress I got. It would have been awesome if it was like-new quality, but it's definitely had some wear, so $2 or $3 would have been much more appropriate.

Next week I'm checking out a thrift shop in Kimberling City. I'm excited to see how it goes!
