Last month, I learned via Twitter that e.l.f. was having a Memorial Day sale where you could get free shipping on orders over $15. I still had the $10 in gift cards from the problems with my last order, so I decided to take advantage of the opportunity to get several items and only spend $5!
If you're unfamiliar with e.l.f. - They're a super affordable brand (most items are $1-3) that's sold online and in a few stores like Target. My luck with their products has been totally hit and miss - there are a few items that I LOVE and will buy over and over, and a few that never make it any farther than the first use. For me, the main appeal is getting to try out a lot of new products without spending a lot of money. The occasional awesome item is just a great bonus! They have sales pretty much all the time, so I usually wait to order until there's an awesome deal. (The best deal I've had is 10 free eye shadows with a $25 order.)
I ordered 7 items this time. I placed the order on 5/26, and it arrived via FedEx on 6/5. Not super speedy, but not too bad.
Here's a quick rundown of everything I got! Since it's only a few items this time, I'm just combining them all into one post.
e.l.f. Essential Liquid Eyeliner in Stardust - $1
I've had mixed luck with these liquid liners in the past. The black one I have is pretty good (especially for $1), but both of the silver ones I've received have arrived with a stiff, dried out brush. Still, I'm someone that finds glittery things hard to resist, so I thought now might be a good time to try this one out!
I was really pleasantly surprised by this! I think I was expecting it to be chunky and not all that wearable, but it's really nice! Applying a line of this glitter doesn't instantly make you look like a disco ball; it's subtle. There's just enough glitter in it to show up (especially when you use it over a dark liner), but not so much that you look like a contestant on Toddlers and Tiaras. (Sparkle, baby!) Once it dries, the glitter stays in place even if you rub it, so there's a possibility that layering this over more smudgy liners might help keep them in place. E.l.f. sells a similar glitter liquid liner in a copper color, so I may pick that up next time.
e.l.f. Essential Waterproof Eyeliner Pen in Teal - $2
While we're on the topic of eyeliners... I also picked up this one! If you've read my past reviews, you know that I LOVE the black version of this. I'm a little bummed to see that they have now raised them from $1 to $2, but it's still a steal.
I'm not sure how often I will actually use this since... let's be honest- it's teal. I've been experimenting with it a bit, though, and if I do a thin line along my upper lashes, it's not all that noticeable as being teal instead of black. I mean, you can obviously tell if you look at me closely, but you wouldn't see it from across the room and think "What is she wearing?" One perk: It makes my eyes look super blue!
The packaging says this is waterproof, so of course I had to put it to the test. The verdict? I'd call it splash-proof, but not waterproof. That is to say that if it gets wet, it doesn't automatically run or come off. However, if you rub it while it's wet, it's gone a few seconds later.
Here's the Stardust glitter liner from above over the teal liner.
e.l.f. Essential Lip Stain in Nude Nectar - $2
I've been wanting to try one of these lip stains for ages! This comes in four different colors, but the others were a little too vivid for my taste. The reviews of these on e.l.f.'s site are not so great, so I wasn't sure how this would work out. It turned out to be about what I expected, which means not great. It feels exactly like you're coloring on your lip with a marker, but there's not much color to show for it. It's a bit drying, but not long lasting. Overall, I'm not a fan. The color gives your lips that "I just had a red popsicle" type of look.
Not super dark, eh? This was after a couple of good swipes of the pen, too. I was thankful to discover that this is unscented, though, since some of e.l.f.'s lip products have interesting scents.
e.l.f. Studio Conditioning Lip Balm SPF 15 in Nice and Natural -$3
This is probably the item that I was MOST excited about! I somehow received this in Mellow Melon in my last order, despite not ordering it, and it ended up being the most lovely surprise! I'm obsessed with how great the first one I got is, but it's not a color I wear much, so I knew I wanted to pick up another one in a more neutral color.
Fairly close to the stock photo. Sorry that the swatch to the left is a little blurry - my camera is on its last legs!
I ended up not liking this one quite as much as the first one I had, because while I wanted something more neutral, this is a little TOO far that direction. It adds only the faintest hint of color to my lips. I wonder if maybe one of the other available colors would be a happy medium?
e.l.f. Essential Jumbo Lip Gloss Stick in Movie Star - $2
Yes, I bought a lot of lip products! I got one of these in Sangria Starters last time, and it's been one of my go-to lip products! I keep it in my purse, and it's so easy to grab for some quick lip color. I'm a big fan of the pencil format- it reminds me a lot of a similar one I have from Pixi, but at like 1/10 of the price!
I picked this color because it looked like it had potential to be a nice red. As tends to be my luck with reds, this was a swing and a miss - it's definitely pink. The swatch in the photo above is after about 10 swipes - it definitely takes a lot to build up much color. I doubt I'll end up using this one much, unless I find something else to layer it with.
e.l.f. Studio Stipple Brush - $3
I was in need of a new foundation brush, so now seemed like a time to pick one up for three bucks!
When I hear "stipple brush", I expect something a bit stiffer and more dense than this. Definitely not what I expected from the photo. It does do a pretty decent job of blending foundation, but it's not what I wanted in terms of an application brush.
e.l.f. Essential Triple Tip Waterproof Eyeliner Pen in black - $2
And the last item of this order, a different eyeliner pen! Since I'm such a huge fan of the other eyeliner pen, this one seemed worth a try.
So far, I'm not a huge fan. The tip design isn't as easy to draw with as the other liner pen, and the formula of the liner itself is a little too watery. It's not a terrible eyeliner, I just prefer the other liner pen a lot more.
Like the teal eyeliner above, this pen claims to be waterproof. It performed about like the teal - it stayed in place when wet, but if I rubbed while it was wet, it went away pretty quickly. However, I did accidentally test the long-wearingness! I took this photo around 9 a.m. one morning, and then totally forgot that I had eyeliner on my wrist and went on about my day. The next morning when I got in the shower, it was still there! Impressive! Of course, it may not last quite that well on eyelids since they tend to get a bit more oily than wrists, but it looks promising.
Pssst, did you know you can read all of my old e.l.f. reviews by clicking here? How magical!
I've missed several weeks of doing The Nail Files, so I made a point of actually remembering to paint my nails this week! I wanted something that totally embraced the bright, somewhat silly nature of summer, so I went with teal glitter! This is by L.A. Colors (I think it's basically a dollar store brand!), and the color is called Treasure Island. I applied it over a base coat of the silver nail polish I posted about here!
Thumbs are pretty weird-looking.
Seeing the sparkly bright color when I look down makes me happy, which I'm pretty sure is what it's all about!
I've been doing these "Current Status" posts for quite a while (You can see all of the past posts I've remembered to tag here), but I'm starting to feel like I need to change up the format a bit. There are certain questions that I never have a great answer for, and other things I feel like I should add.
Current Book: I've been trying to go through my two entire bookshelves of unread books, deciding which to take to Florida with me and which to sell/donate. My theory was that I would read a chapter or so of each to see if it's something I'll dig, and then move on to the next. However, I'm finding it hard to stop reading once I start one! I also hit a major funky mood a few days ago and decided that the cure was to start rereading Harry Potter. I finished Sorcerer's Stone yesterday, started Chamber of Secrets today. This brings us to this cover art that appeared on Order of the Phoenix in Finland:
I can't even go into commenting on Umbridge, but after great discussion some Facebook friends and I did finally conclude that the boy on the left is supposed to be James, and that's Snape upside down in the background. (This was after a fairly significant "Why the eff is Ron brunette?" conversation.") Other highlights of this discussion included my friend Kellen refering to that reddish thing Harry is wearing as a "Vagazzled octopus." But really, Finland illustrator person, just because someone is described as "toad-faced", you don't have to take that description 100000% literally. Just sayin'. Current Music: Oh, hey, good question! What have I been listening to lately? I did discover Garfunkel and Oates. Current guilty pleasure: Toddlers and Tiaras is back on! This is my guiltiest of guilty pleasures. (Or maybe Honey Boo Boo is? Which do you guys think is worse to love? Let me know.) Tonight's (or last night's, for you non-nocturnal folks) episode included a girl whose parents own a company that sends strippers to hotel rooms for "parties". I couldn't even tweet about it, the jokes were all too obvious. I tried to find a gif of Mimi from tonight's episode running after a peacock to accompany this tweet:
But I couldn't find one (I fail at the Internet, I guess.) so I'm just going to stick this classic gif here instead.
(This is probably the episode Katie and I quote most often. It's not uncommon for one of us to throw out a random "BE-YON-CE!") Current drink: While at the grocery store earlier tonight, I found a bin of little airplane sized bottles of UV Vodka for $1 each. I grabbed the peach one and decided to enjoy it a bit later. It was truly awful. How can you screw up PEACH vodka? Yeesh. Current food: So, here's the thing, y'all. I think Sabra may have replaced my beloved Greek Olive Hummus with a new, slightly different "Olive Tapenade Hummus". IT IS TERRIBLE.
Current favorite show: I'm still TV-less. Probably won't bother replacing it before I move. Alas, alas.
Current wish list: I think I'm finally ready to switch to an Android phone. I've missed out on at least three sponsored blog posts now because I don't have Instagram. The money from those would have paid for a new phone. Ugh.
Current need: A giant loaf of banana bread from Hy-Vee. This is not a want, this is a legit physical need. Some chocolate almond butter to go with it would be rad, too.
Current triumph: I went through the giant desk where I keep all of my beauty products tonight, and filled an entire box with things to get rid of. You do not want to know how many lip glosses I own.
Current bane of my existence: Poison ivy and bug bites. Summer is trying to ensure that I not look cute in any of the little summery dresses I've been looking forward to wearing.
Current excitement: Today I learned that when the new Simpsons area of Universal is complete, there will be a Bumblebee Man Taco Truck. Now all they need to do is add Disco Stu and I can say that all of my dreams have come true. (Except for that one, about that one thing.) Random Fact: I'm adding this category! Oooh, ahh. Okay, this month's random fact: When I was 3 or 4, I somehow decided that I *hated* my ankles, and beggged my Mom to cut them off. I then collapsed onto the sofa in tears for at least an hour over the fact that she would not cut them off. I was also pretty pissed that she wouldn't legally change my name to She-Ra, but that paled in comparison to making me go through life with these weird bumpy things by my feet. The nerve! Current Link: This is one of the best Pinterest boards I've seen. I'd love to see more people putting this kind of effort in.
I am going to spend all of next week STALKING my mailman, because this top from Ellie is on its way to my house!
If you follow my blog's Facebook, you know I basically had an existential crisis trying to decide what to pick. I'm pretty happy with my choice, even though I'm probably kind of dumb for picking something with long sleeves when I'm about to move back to Florida. But I couldn't pass up those cute netted shoulders, and what I expect to be SUPER soft material! (I've wanted to live in basically everything I've gotten from Ellie so far!)
I'm so obsessed with this collection, I want EVERYTHING. I'm pretty happy I'm at least getting a top, though! (My top is at 27 seconds in the video below.) I seriously think their collections are getting better and better each month. I'm not sure my poor fashion loving heart can take whatever comes next!
I'm *still* working on my review of my stuff from the Coral Crush collection. I should have it up any day! (I know, I've been saying that for ages!) I just had to share my excitement over this particular top, because I think it might be my new favorite thing. And also because I'm procrastinating packing. But mostly out of love!
This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Coastal.com for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.
I have to admit that sometimes when I'm putting an outfit together, I almost wish I didn't have 20/20 vision, because a cute pair of glasses would make the perfect accessory to bring what I'm wearing together. I have a couple of faux pairs with clear lenses, but it's just not the same. I was asked to check out the Designer Eyeglasses at Coastal.com and share my fashionable opinion with you, so let's do it!
The Derek Cardigan Eyeglasses are seriously cute and totally on trend. They've been seen in music videos by artists like Alicia Keys and Flo Rida, and are all over Instagram outfit posts!
I think this might be my favorite pair from the collection. They're such a quick way to add a quirky, retro vibe to an otherwise not so exciting look! I'm always a fan of fun, feminine design.
A peek at a few of the other styles offered in the collection. I love the little icons below each pair that let you know if they are for men, women, or both, since it can be hard to tell when shopping online! I had fun browsing through the selection, and couldn't help but picture outfits that would look cute with each style of glasses.
My favorite thing about Coastal.com is that they also give back! For each pair of glasses purchased, they donate a pair to a person in need via their "Change the View" charity project. How great is that? Gotta love shopping that you can feel good about!
A couple of weeks ago, I decided to go do the waterfall hiking trail in Branson one more time before the weather got scorching hot. (You can read about my first time on that trail here!) I decided to make a little video of it for you this time!
Humble apologies for how bumpy and shaky it is, but I was mostly filming while walking. I also look a MESS, but let's see you go do a hike with sweaty sun and kamikaze bugs flying into your eyes and tree limbs attacking your hair and come out looking pretty, ya know?
I used the anti-shake thing on Youtube to eliminate a lot of the bounciness from me walking, but it seems to have made it a bit more blurry. Sorry about that!
A question for those of you who are outdoorsy: What is the best way to clean muddy shoes?
My beloved trail shoes are getting a little funky. They're made for kind of rough conditions, but I'm so worried I'll mess them up washing them! Anyone know the right way to do it?
This is unfortunately the best photo I got of what I think were crawdads? I find them so creepy!
I'm fairly doubtful that I'll get the chance to do any more hiking trails before I move back to Florida. I'm running short on time, and temperatures have been in the 90s which is just too hot for it to be fun. If we get a nice "cold" snap of low 80s, I'll probably take advantage of it, but the chances seem slim!
If you want to see a hiking trail video that is MUCH better than mine, check out the video that my "little brother" Mike made of his week hiking through Ocala National Forest. You can find that here!
As much as I've tried to ignore the fact that it's happening, Google Reader will be going away at the end of this month! I've checked out several other ways to follow my favorite blogs, and so far Bloglovin seems to be the winner. Use the link above to follow me there - I'll add a widget in the side bar soon, too!
In an effort to get everything in one place, I imported all of the posts from my old "Insert Witty Title Here" blog to this one. You can now find (almost) everything from 2000-2007 over in the archives!
I posted the first batch of my favorite items from the 2014 Resort season collections yesterday, and now I'm back for round two! I had really expected to be able to fit everything in one post, since there's not usually all that much from Resort that I find comment-worthy, but this year there turned out to be quite a bit!
Oh, Michael Kors, you know I love a good giraffe print. This is lovely.
I can't figure out how I feel about this outfit, and I like that. The dress almost feels like it's made out of shiny wallpaper, and the snakeskin (I think?) shoes are an interesting compliment. I can't decide. But I do love when dresses have pockets! (Ports 1961)
This Rachel Zoe look is almost painfully stylish. Ugh. I also wish I knew who this model was, because she's stunning.
This Rag and Bone dress has a sort of Hugh Hefner bathrobe look to it, but still feels kind of luxurious (in that I think it would be fun to wear).
HOW perfect is this Sachin + Babi dress? I'm in love. Perfect shoes, too.
This dress is from Sachin + Babi, too. I'm not as in love with it, but I realllllllly love that little peek of sequin fabric at the bottom! Adore.
Obsessed with this fabric that keeps showing up in the Tory Burch collection. (This collection also includes some really masterful mixing of prints!)
This look from Trina Turk is just so appealing to me. It's super wearable, but thoughtfully pulled together.
This Versace dress is *delicious*.
Flipping through this Zac Posen collection is like walking through a sculpture garden. The shapes are just incredible.
It feels like forever since I've done a fashion week post! I can't even tell you guys how good it felt to dive into style.com tonight and get lost in pretty things. I know that Resort doesn't get as much attention as the other seasons (I'm admittedly a Fall person), but I've been so starved for fashion goodness that I'm pretty darn excited about it! (And following my recent trend, I started this post about 10 days ago and then totally forgot to finish it! Blogging fail!)
I have a serious crush on this Elie Tahari dress! It doesn't feel "resort" to me, but I'd love to wear it!
This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Miracle-Gro for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.
Now that Spring is almost over, I'm seeing a ton of fun garden projects on Pinterest and other social media. I've been a little bummed since the fact that I'm moving in a couple of months means that I won't have very long to enjoy any gardening I do here before I leave. However, after checking out the seriously cute Toyarium on Miracle-Gro's The Gro Project, it occured to me that I could do something small and portable and still indulge my desire to get my green thumb a little dirty!
Since I'll be living in an apartment with cats, my plant possibilities are pretty limited. I not only needed to pick something that can survive in a windowsill, but that will be safe if one of the cats decides to chew on it. (A lot of household plants can be toxic to cats!)
I started with this cute cat planter that I came across while cleaning out the closet a while back. I've been waiting to figure out a good use for it, and this seemed like the perfect project! If you don't have a cute planter to use, I've seen some great unique ones made by cutting a hole in plastic toys so that they can be filled with soil!
Supplies assembled! I would have prefered to use potting soil, but I only had three days to write this post, so this came straight from my back yard. (Miracle-Gro makes an organic potting mix that would have been perfect!) Thank goodness catnip doesn't need to be planted very deep- just getting this much was a major chore given how rocky the soil is here! I thought I might need to do a layer of rocks at the bottom of the planter to fill up some space, but it ended up being more shallow than I expected. All I had to do was a layer of soil, sprinkle on some seeds, and then top it off with more soil!
It's now sitting in my living room window with the open side facing the sun, ready to start growing!
Check out The Gro Project for gardening project ideas and tips! They have products like the LiquaFeed All Purpose Plant Food Advance Starter Kit that make it super easy, even if you have a busy schedule. I think I'm proof that you don't need a ton of time, money or space to get something growing!
Today I realized that the current news stories in Orlando perfectly sum up why I miss my city so much. Here are three things in the news back home that bring me great amusement:
1. Tropical Storm
I've been joking about how lovely it is that as soon as tornado season is over, I'm leaving the Midwest just in time to get to Florida for hurricane season. It looks like the storms are getting an early start this year, though, since we already have our first named tropical storm! Nothing too exciting seems to be happening yet, but Orlando is getting a crapload of rain.
One of the major news stories yesterday was this little bear fellow that felt like hanging out in our lovely downtown area, so he just picked a tree and enjoyed the view. You can read the whole news story here.
I've been loving all of the pics of the new Springfield expansion at Universal, where you can now have a beer at Moe's Tavern, eat a Krusty Burger, or visit my favorite shop name, Lisa's Teahouse of Horror. I'm a huge Simpsons fan, so I can't wait to visit this new area as soon as I'm back in town!
I recently got sucked into watching a TON of Disney College Program vlogs on YouTube. It's funny- most people make like a dozen videos *before* they begin their college program, talking about their phone interviews and packing and all that, but then as soon as they actually move to Florida and start work, their vlogs either totally stop or drop down to once every couple of months. (The same thing happens with blogs!) It's super frustrating to get all invested in someone's story and then have them just disappear!
I thought I'd share a few CP vloggers that I've come across that I thought were especially awesome!
I am so late on reviewing my last two shipments of subscription packages from Ellie! I'm been putting it off because I wanted to do a video and haven't had time, but since I have some time sensitive info to share, I thought I'd go ahead and talk about my March items, then come back in a few days with April's and include the video there!
If you haven't read my other Ellie posts, here's the basic info in a nutshell: It's a monthly subscription service where you get two active wear items each month for a flat fee. ($49.95 regularly, but 20% off if you use my link at the bottom of the post.) You can pick a top and a bottom, two tops, two bottoms... whatever floats your boat! If (for whatever reason) you don't like what you get, it's free to send it back for something else. You can end your subscription any time, and skip months when nothing catches your fancy or you want to use that money for awesome concert tickets instead.
March's theme was the Little Black Collection!
There are normally 24 items available to pick from each month but for March there were 7 tops and 5 bottoms (2 leggings, 2 capris, 1 pair of shorts.) I think that they were trying to catch up on orders, since they were still ironing out the kinks at that point, so doing a smaller collection helped. As you may guess from the name of the collection, everything this month was black!
The two items I picked were both in their Top 5 for the month! (Fun fact- the Back in Black Tank shown above was the first item to sell out!) It took me a few days to really pick which ones I wanted - I pondered picking two tops this month (numbers 1 and 2 above), but in the end I couldn't pass up the shorts!
Moon Shadow Shorts
These are the first shorts that Ellie offered (there have been shorts in both collections since), so I was pretty excited to check them out! I have to admit I'm on the fence about them. The wide, low waistband is great, and I like the built-in brief so you don't feel like you're flashing people. However, on me these are REALLY short. Borderline scandalous. I blame the fact that I'm a bit over 5'10", so I have unusual proportions. They look short on the model, but not indecent. As much as I like the design of them, I haven't yet worn these out of the house.
Shorts, plus what feels like way too much of my skin for the ol' Internets. Yes, I really am that pale.
So far, I totally prefer the two pairs of capris I've ordered from Ellie so far, and will probably be sticking with capris/leggings for a while. The pairs I have are SO soft and comfy and literally turn heads if you have to stop and put gas in your car while wearing them. They're a huge ego boost!
Back in Black tank:
This was a case of "close, but not quite right" for me. The idea of the top is great- It's basically a black sports bra attached to a black mesh tank top. The sides are mostly open, so you get plenty of ventilation. I was worried about the whole built-in bra thing when I ordered, because in general those NEVER work for me. I asked on their Facebook page what cup size the bra would fit, and they said up to DD, so I decided to give it a try. Alas, not so much with the fit. While nothing is exactly popping out, the sports bra part of the top is much too small on me. I'd say more accurately that the size Large I got would best fit a C cup, maybe a smallish D, but definitely nothing bigger. If you're on the larger side, you'll probably want to pair it with another bra since there's not a ton of support. The band size would probably work best if you wear a 34 or 36. (I alternate between 36 and 38 depending on the brand, and it was just a little tight on me.) I may do a giveaway for this one, since it's just plain not going to work on me, but would be awesome on someone with a slightly different build. Anyone interested?
The mesh part of the top is free-floating for the most part. Here it is pulled to the side to show the sports bra underneath.
Yeeeeeah, not so much with the fitting on top.
Okay, the handy info I wanted to share!
*Starting in June, Ellie will start offering size XL! I am super excited about this, because my boobs just don't fit in some of the more fitted shirts, and because it vastly expands the number of people who will be able to find something that fits!
*News I'm less excited about- They say that starting June 15, they will start charging for shipping. If you sign up before that date, you'll continue to get the free shipping, but new members that sign up after will be charged. (Return shipping will still be free.) I've seen several people comment on the Ellie Facebook page that they're not a fan of the change, so maybe they'll change their mind before then? Still, if you've been on the fence about when to sign up, I'd go for sooner rather than later! (You can always save 20% via my link below.)
*The excellent news is that I've been watching their Facebook page, and it seems like the customer service issues they were having have pretty much been ironed out. They've started waiting to release each month's collection until everything is in stock and ready to ship out the same day you order, so there are now almost zero complaints about shipping time.
I didn't order anything from the May collection, but I did a screenshot so you guys could have a peek!
There are two other tops and another pair of leggings that I couldn't fit in the shot, but at least you get an idea. I LOVE that they finally did a pair of flared leggings!
What's coming up for June?
Not sure about the details, but it looks like there may be some kind of tennis theme happening! The new collection is set to be released somewhere around the middle of June.
I'm really happy with the expanded variety of items offered! The first month was pretty much all tight fitting tank tops and basic leggings, so it's made me happy to see shorts, looser fitting tops, flared pants and now (next month) a running skirt added!
You can check out my February item review post here, or the video review post here! My review of the April items and a video of both March and April will be up sometime this week!
As an Ellie ambassador, I received this outfit at no charge to facilitate my review and may receive commission for actions taken via my links. All opinions are 100% honest, and I try to offer a thorough review that shows all of the pros and cons.
