e.l.f. Ex-tra Lip Gloss - Reviews and Swatches

If you saw my e.l.f. haul post from a few days ago, you knew this was coming! I ordered 4 of the new glosses from e.l.f.'s EX-tra lip gloss line, and since there were almost no reviews online when I was preparing to order them, I wanted to make sure to put one up ASAP to help other people who like to read reviews before ordering!

So far, these are available in 6 different shades. Going with the "ex" theme, each color has a man's name. Cheesy or cute? I vote cute, but there's also something a little creepy about thinking, "Do I want to wear Marc or Michael on my lips today?" I ordered 4 of the 6 available colors (Michael was out of stock, and Joe looks too orange-y for me.) I'm hoping that these come out in a wider variety of shades eventually since (spoiler alert!) I like them quite well, but several of the colors so far are pretty similar to each other.

From top to bottom: Brett, Marc, Brian, Scott

Ah, the joy of inexpensive cosmetics - you sometimes get things like sloppy sticker application.

Brett   -   Marc   -   Brian   -   Scott

If you want a gloss that has a lot of color to it, these definitely deliver. They're also pretty true to the color they appear to be in the tube.

Although Marc and Brian look really similar, they are definitely different when applied: Brian is more of a Pepto Bismol pink, while Marc is a bit deeper - more of a berry hue. There's a small amount of glitter in all of them, but it's really not noticeable once they're on your lips.

One strange thing - Brett has a fairly strong scent that makes me think of fruit punch, but the other three didn't really have an identifiable scent, just a sort of musty lip gloss smell (if that makes sense).

I love the formula of these glosses. They're easy to apply, richly pigmented, not sticky, and have a nice shine without being over the top glittery. You can apply them lightly for a hint of color, but full strength gives you as much color as a lipstick. Definitely worth the $2 they cost.

As far as my personal preferences go, Brett is a bit too bold for an everyday look for me, but it's great for a more dramatic going out look or used over a red lipstick. Marc is one of my favorites - it's a little more pink than I'd usually wear, but I still like it. Brian is a bit too light for me. Scott looks very neutral on my lips since it's not that far off from my natural lip color, so it just adds a little something.

If you're into ingredients, here's the list from the official e.l.f. site:
Polybutene, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil), Silica Dimethyl Silylate, Microcrystalline Wax, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenoxytethanol, Tocopheryl Acetate (Ve), Retinyl Palmitate (Va), Neotame, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Fragrance (Parfum). MAY CONTAIN: Mica, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Red 40 Lake (CI 16035), Red 7 Lake (CI 15850), Red 6 Lake (CI 15850), Yellow 5 Lake (CI 19140), Blue 1 Lake (CI 42090).

Hope that helps! Overall, I'm delighted to find another gloss from e.l.f. that I like, and I'd be even happier if they expand the number of colors available!

Thanks for reviewing these! Helpful since, like you said, no one had done it yet. Weird how different Marc and Brian look on skin vs the applicator.

I hope they come out with more colors. Those are okay but none make me want to run to the store. I think I like the "ex" theme... I don't know that I could buy one named after a guy I'd dated though.

I'm totally freaked out that they're named after men, but I'd wear Scott in a heartbeat. >_<

I'd never heard of e.l.f. I'm going to have to give these lip glosses a try. I really like the color "Marc."
