Keeping Kitty In Shape (with a pet food giveaway! 10 winners!) #HillsPet

So, here's my question: The internet loves cats. Tons of people love weight loss TV shows. How is there not yet a kitty version of The Biggest Loser yet? Billion dollar idea, I'm telling you.

Seriously, though, the trend towards having a few extra pounds isn't something that only affects the human population - it seems to be transferring over to our pets, too. In the US, 55% of cats and 53% of dogs are overweight. In fact, the number of overweight cats in the US has increased by NINETY percent in the past 5 years! How crazy is that? Have we all gotten too caught up in tweeting or Instagraming Fluffy's latest cute thing to really stop and pay attention to their weight?

So far my boys are pretty lean, but I do worry about them getting heavier as they get older! Especially Ten, who insists on spending half his time on my shoulder. (Eep - makeupless photo! He decided to "help" me get ready this day!)

Part of it comes from people just not realizing that their pet is overweight. It's like with people - if you're around someone every day, you might not notice a gradual change in their appearance until you look back at photos from a few years ago and see how drastic the difference is. Plus, most of us love to indulge our pets, so feeling like we're depriving them if we try to cut back on food or treats sends us into guilt trip land, even if it's for a good reason. And as anyone who has watched that cat behavior show on Animal Planet probably knows, a lot of people try to make changes but get frustrated quickly if they don't work, and end up just sort of giving up and accepting things the way they are.

How cute is this video?? And so true!

Wandering Leu Gardens

I realized today that I still have a few posts about my December trip to Orlando sitting in my draft folder that I never finished! This is one of 'em. (This post is super photo heavy, so if you're reading on my home page you'll have to click to read more!)

Ten Things on Tuesday - #3

It's Tuesday! Let's talk about random things!

1. Can we talk about how awesome it feels to get rid of stuff? After I finished going through my Disney box that I mentioned a few Tuesday posts ago, I moved on to some other things and was surprised with how much I had that I was cool with parting with.

2. When did Mc Donalds start putting the number of calories on their menu board? I hardly ever go so maybe it's been there for years, but dude, it totally ruined my breakfast. How am I supposed to enjoy my food when I've just been reminded in clear, numerical form just how horrible it is? Booo!

3. Might as well share my TOTAL fail at nail polish organization here. I've been hunting for a way to organize my nail polishes, but the fact that the bottles are so many different shapes and sizes makes it tricky! This was my current setup:

Yeeeah, totally not organized. Some in a little basket, mini sizes in a box, lots of others scattered randomly.

I found this plastic thing at the dollar store the other day and thought hey! That might work! (It's actually made to go under potted plants. Whatever.)

Conclusion? Total fail. Why did I think this would work? I'm sure I'll find some other use for it.

4. Speaking of organizing, I have been trying to organize the folder that holds all of the photos of the dresses I'm working on. A lot of times I'll get inspired to work on a piece but won't be able to remember if I already have a "before" picture of it or not. I decided to make a folder that had one before pic of each dress (organized by color) so that I could just scroll through easily to check. When I was finished, I realized that I have almost 100 before pics! Yikes! I really need to have a sewing marathon day!

5. The cognitive poetics class I'm taking used an example from Tom Robbins this week. It made me super happy. (There was also an example from Harry Potter. YAY.)

6. I've still been using my winter candles, but I finally gave in and picked up a new mini from Bath and Body Works this weekend. Loving it - it kind of smells like fruity gum!

7. Add me to the list of people disappointed in Vogue for putting Kim Kardashian and Kanye on the cover this month. YOU ARE VOGUE. We have higher standards for you. Save that crap for Cosmopolitan.

8. My friend Mike has started a blog to chronicle his journey towards running the New York Marathon this year! You can check it out here.

9. I really need to do a "What I've been reading" post! I haven't done one in ages and I've been reading some really fantastic things!

10. I'm hitting publish on this post at 11:52 pm because I may have kind of napped an hour or two longer than I meant to. Oops. But it's still Tuesday!

In case you missed them, I have 2 giveaways going on right now! You can win the Veronica Mars movie dvd (ends the 27th) or a $50 Lowe's gift card! (Ends April 1)

Ten Things on Tuesday

Eeep, how is it already Tuesday? I'm going to try sticking to the 10 Things Tues for a while, so let's see if I have ten for this week!

1. I've been super sick the past few days, to the point that I totally slept through St. Patrick's Day! How NOT festive! I'll just have to make up for it with extra Easter awesomeness!

2. YOU GUYS, we actually have public transportation in Orlando now! I mean sure, we've had the Lynx buses forever, but I don't really know many people who actually use them. So excited for the Sunrail, especially once they add some expansions to the routes!  (awesome gif via Local Shine)

3. I think I'm going to give up trying to sell things on the local Facebook yard sale group. (I wrote about that last Tues). I had one person totally stand me up this week (she never sent an apology, either). Super annoying when people don't show respect for my time! So I messaged the other person I was supposed to meet a few days later, something along the lines of "Hey, just wanted to confirm we're meeting at 2 today!" Her response? "I think I'm going to pass." WTF, lady? It was especially frustrating because I'd planned out the timeline of my whole afternoon around the time I'd agreed to meet her, so that threw me off. But seriously, if you change your mind about wanting something, have the common courtesy to let me know MORE than half an hour before we're supposed to meet! Arrgh!

So, yeah. I think I'm just going to hold off until there's nice enough weather to have a good old fashioned yard sale. Dealing with these people is just too much frustration!

4. My kitten Tennyson kept watch over me the whole time I was sick. It was basically the cutest thing ever. I could have probably done without the time when he tried to stick his head in the toilet when I was in the middle of throwing up (ewwww), but it was a nice show of solidarity.

5. I'm currently super annoyed by the fact that car rental agencies require you to either have a credit card or do a giant deposit if you pay via debit card. Is there any way around this? It would make my upcoming travel plans SO much easier!

6. I have a bit of a conundrum! There's this stripey pink dress that I really want to work on, but I can't find my "before" photo of it anywhere. (Most of my thrift store makeover pics live on their own memory card, to make life easier!) It's no fun to show you guys the "after" if I don't have a "before" for comparison, so I figured I'd just reshoot it tomorrow. (I still look too gross from being sick to even think about doing photos today!) However, my Canon is totally falling apart. I need to send it in to get fixed, since I've only had it like 6 months, so I'm pretty sure it's still under warranty. Taking full-lenth selfies on my phone is pretty much impossible, so I'm left with either digging out my decade old Nikon or borrowing my mom's camera. Or, I guess I could just hang it up and take a photo of the dress without me in it? Blogging is complicated! ;)

7. Speaking of dresses, I am in love with the one I'm currently working on! It was originally going to be a super simple refashion where I chopped off a bit of length and adjusted the fit, but I ended up changing some things around that made it a) 100% more awesome and b) 100% more complicated. I'm excited to share it once I finish sewing, though!

Yoga does not only transform the body, but yoga transforms the mind

8. This is my current goal, and motivation to keep up with my yoga practice. I can get the top leg up to about a 120-ish degree angle, but I'm nowhere near being able to do 180 degrees like the photo. Just keep stretching!

9. Even though I was only out of commission for about a day and a half while sick, I feel like I'm miles behind on *everything*! Stop coming in, email! I need to catch up on you!

"When life seems dangerous and unmanageable, just remember that it is, and that you can't survive forever. Welcome to Night Vale."
10. Seriously, if you aren't listening to Welcome To Night Vale by now, I'm not sure there's hope for you.

Fresh Savings Event at Publix!

You guys know by now that I have a bit of an obsession with Publix, so I wanted to pass on info about another snazzy sales event they're doing. (I'm a little late on posting this one - it ends the 19th!) The Fresh Savings event seems to pop up a few times a year, and it focuses on adding fresh foods to convienient products you already use (adding fresh fruit to your cereal or oatmeal at breakfast, fresh veggies or meat to your pasta at dinner). I love this event because Publix is known for having an awesome produce section - most of my Florida friends consider it their go-to for fresh fruits and vegetables!

The event includes coupons that you'll find both in the store and in the weekly ad (Those are good till the 26th, so you have some time!) and online by clicking here! My personal favorite? "Save $2 on a Publix® Bakery item with the purchase of any Breyers product". Oh fine, I'll have cake and ice cream if you insist, Publix! It's so rare to find coupons for things like produce and bakery items, so grab these discounts while you can!

Decadent Dessert Cakes
That one on the left is called "Strawberry and Peach Sensation" and I need it in my life.

Publix was lovely enough to send me a gift card for telling you about the sale, and I intend to put it to good use next month by stopping for snacks to take to the beach with me! Woohoo!

Snowballing

Know what is seriously frustrating? When something awesome or weird is happening, but your phone or camera refuses to capture it in a way that conveys the level of weirdness/awesomeness.

My morning has been filled with giant snowflakes (or "snow chunks" as I've more accurately been calling them) that look totally unreal, like something out of a movie with such a low budget for special effects that they aren't even trying. These are not flakes falling down from the sky, they are snowballs. It is insane. And I can not get a single photo or video that makes it look like anything other than normal snow. I even went OUTSIDE onto the deck to try, but no luck.

Despite the inability to capture the Flakes Of Doom, I'm going to take you on a little journey through today. Here we go.

This blurry beauty was taken at 12:02 pm. You really can't see much of anything, but I think that you can at least tell that those are Snowflakes of Unusual Size. (SUS's)

This is what the view from my back door looked like around 1:30 pm. Keep in mind that there was ZERO snow out there when I woke up 2 hours before.

2:30 pm

Oh, and it's supposed to be 53 degrees tomorrow and 64 on Tuesday. Go home winter, you are drunk.

On Not Judging A Snack By Its Cover

You guys, I procrastinated snacking.

Let me explain. My life is kind of weird in that I not only get paid to eat things ever since I started being a mystery shopper, but I also get quite a bit of food in the mail that companies send me to try out and maybe blog about. I love getting packages all of the time, but I have to admit that I occasionally get a little lazy. I open the box that just arrived, (and immediately hand the box and the crumpled paper inside to Grem, if he isn't already inside it and purring while I try to see what's in there) check out whatever snazzy thing they sent me, but then sometimes I set that snazzy thing aside with plans to get back to it later and then kind of... forget. Oops.

The main reason that I didn't immediately dig into the Nature Valley Breakfast Biscuits that I was sent by Plateful Co-Op was that I opened the box to check them out and felt through the package that they were quite hard. I have super sensitive teeth, so I try to avoid anything really crunchy since it usually ends in pain. (Someday, when I finally get everything dental taken care of, I'm probably going to spend like an entire week eating all of the stuff I've been avoiding for years!) Anyway, since I assumed that I wouldn't be able to eat these, I didn't really think about them for a while and they sat on a kitchen shelf for a couple of weeks. Oops. However, late last night I went digging around for a snack and after discovering that I was out of cookies and all things chocolate, I started pondering the idea of dunking these in some almond milk.

OMG you guys, it was so good. It's currently about 8 hours after I first tried them, and I'm already on my 3rd little package. (The first ones I tried were the honey flavor, so I obviously had to check out the blueberry next. And now it's morning, so I grabbed another package of the honey for breakfast.) I'd best describe them as somewhere between a graham cracker and an oatmeal cookie. I'm so glad that I didn't give up on these just because I initially assumed I wouldn't like them. Next time, I need to try dunking them in coffee.

If you're a Publix shopper, you might like to know that these are on sale for $1.99/box until 3/21! There's also a coupon available for 50 cents off a box here!

Veronica Mars Movie Is Coming! (And you can WIN IT!)

I was a huge Veronica Mars fan when it was originally on the air, so I was super excited when the Kickstarter for the movie got funded last year! It seems like time has flown since then, and now it's coming out THIS WEEK! (March 14th!) Have you read the plot summary?

On the eve of graduating law school, Veronica Mars has put Neptune and her amateur sleuthing days behind her. While interviewing at high-end New York law firms, Veronica Mars gets a call from her ex-boyfriend Logan who has been accused of murder. Veronica heads back to Neptune just to help Logan find an attorney, but when things don't seem right with how Logan's case is perceived and handled, Veronica finds herself being pulled back into a life she thought she had left behind.

AHHHH, EXCITED! Especially excited that Logan is back!

For my fellow fans, check out the awesome trivia app below to see how you measure up in your show knowledge! There are 3 skill levels to pick from.

Ten Things On Tuesday

I still haven't figured out what to call my random Tuesday post, so this week I'm trying Ten Things!

1. Do you guys have any totally irrational fears? I frequently have this moment of panic when starting my car where I worry that I have my foot on the gas instead of the brake, and I'll go shooting off when it starts. Where is my brain even getting this? I've been driving for half my life now and I've never put my foot on the wrong pedal, so why do I keep thinking that I might? So weird. (If you have a similar weird thing, I totally want to hear about it! Make me feel less crazy!)

2. My Ten kitten turned 7 months old yesterday! This means that it has been approximately 6 months since I've done anything around the house without a cat on my shoulder.

This is what putting on makeup usually looks like.

Embedded image permalink

3. I have an awesome giveaway coming tomorrow! Ooooh, ahhh, suspense!

4. I finally got to hit up the thrift store bag sale today! (Missed last month's because of the weather!) It was supposed to be last week, but they had to reschedule due to ice/snow. Apparently most people didn't know about the reschedule, because instead of the usual crowd waiting at the door when they opened, I was the ONLY one there! I didn't score anything amazing, but I did get a few items that I'm pretty excited to work on!

5. I finally got a blender and have been having way too much fun making smoothies and shakes and such. Must remember to post about some of my favorites soon! I've been doing a seriously badass caramel coffee thingy!

6. I REALLY need to finish up posting about my Nov/Dec trip to Orlando! Especially since I'm going back soon! (Oooh, ahh!) I miss hooooome!

7. I decided that I needed to dig through my box of Disneyish things and get rid of a lot. Keeping some things from vacations and work is cool, but I really do not need this huge of a box!

8. SO MUCH RAGE over the Bachelor finale last night! I can't even. I vented on Twitter a lot, so you can scroll through my feed there if you want to see my ranting, but... ARRGHHH. Did any of you guys watch? I totally want to hear what you thought if you did!

9. This top is one of the things that I grabbed at the bag sale this morning, and I can't quite decide if it is cute or hideous. Votes?

10. After all of my woes trying to sell things on the Facebook yard sale group (I got stood up by a woman I was supposed to meet to sell some kitchen stuff today! Arrgh!), I made an appointment with a consignment shop to take some clothes over on Friday. Cross your fingers that I score some mad cash! (I need money to move HOME! Have I whined about that enough yet?)

Coming up with 10 things is hard! Haven't yet decided if I'll stick to this or go back to a random number of random Tuesday things. Anyway, I have enchiladas in the oven (Yes, at almost 11 pm) so I am going to hit post and then continue digging through the box of Disney things while watching Friends! Feel free to feed my ego with some comment love!

New Dial Deep Cleansing Hand Soap Review & Giveaway

Dial has just come out with a new line of deep cleansing hand soaps, and they were awesome enough to send me a couple to try out, as well as some coupons to let a couple of my readers try them for free, too! Woohoo!

It is entirely possible that I photographed these in my window to avoid having to clean my sink for a photo.

I was sent the Yellow Raspberry and Black Sugar scented soap, as well as the Coconut Lime Verbena. Of the two that I was sent, I prefer the sweeter raspberry scent. (Are yellow raspberries an actual thing, btw? I know of red and blue... am I missing out?) There's a third scent, Water Blossoms, but alas, I didn't get that one. I did stop by the store to smell it and really liked it! As you might guess from the name, it has a sweet floral scent.

This new formula contains micro-scrubbers to deep clean your skin, as well as moisturizers to keep it soft. If you look closely at the soap, you can definitely see the little scrubby beads!

I'm a fan of the bright colors and modern designs of the bottles, too. I'd love to see a few more scents and colors added to the lineup! I liked feeling the little scrubbing beads working as I lathered up my hands. My skin felt soft and clean after use, and although there was a great burst of scent as I was washing, only a little bit of the sweet smell lingered on my skin. (I'm not a fan of soaps that leave behind so much scent that you feel like you have to wash up all over again!) If you'd like to read more about these (including a full list of the ingredients), you can find them on Dial's website here!

Dial was lovely enough to send me some coupons to give away! Each is good for one free bottle of the new Dial Deep Cleansing Hand Soap in the scent of your choice. I'll be picking two winners, and each winner will get two coupons. Just a note - these coupons expire the end of this month, so I'm keeping this giveaway fairly quick so that the winners will have time to use them!

I Totally Celebrated National Frozen Food Day

Did y'all know that yesterday was National Frozen Food day? I believe that one should celebrate as many food-related holidays as possible, so I hit the frozen aisle with one of the coupons that Plateful Co-Op sent me for the frozen Old El Paso entrees. I've had the chicken enchiladas before so my original plan was to try something new, but apparently I am old and set in my ways because I ended up with the same thing again! (They also make fajitas and burritos and quesadillas and beef enchiladas, so maybe I'll eventually get around to trying something different!)

Proof that other varieties really do exist, and that I'm not too cool to whip out my phone for photos in the frozen aisle.

Sorry, yours probably won't come with an adorable Gremlin kitten!

I'm a total cheese addict, so I add a bit of extra cheese on top when they're finished, as well as a bit of salsa. (Is adding salsa weird? Oh, well.) When they sent me the coupons for the entrees, they also sent some cute margarita glasses and I had this great idea where I was going to pick up one of those frozen margaritas in a bag, but then I totally spaced out at the grocery store and forgot the bag-o-booze. Sadness!

I would show you an "after" photo, but these mostly just look like mush after 40 minutes of baking. They're tasty mush, though! (Why is it that some of the best tasting food is the least photogenic?) I can usually get at least 3 large (for me) meals out of a box, so I know what I'm having for lunch today!

Disclosure: I was provided with information and a package of prodcts by Old El Paso® through Platefull Co-Op. I was not otherwise compensated for this post, and opinions/views are my own.

That Tuesday Thing

Yeah, I still haven't figured out a new name for my weekly Tuesday ramblings. Hit me with your suggestions! Anyway, here's what's up this week!

*Today is Mardi Gras! If I were in Florida, I'd head over to Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter resort for some beignets and such, but alas, I am not. POFQ doesn't rank among my favorite resorts, but I do love it. I spent a week working there once for a special project and it grew on me a lot while I was there. I think that my favorite thing about the resort is the fact that all of the pathways between the buildings have incredibly cute names:

*I am SO over snow! I did the math and if you add up this entire winter, I've spent almost an entire month snowed in. I should be able to get out of my driveway tomorrow (OMG, I hope! I'm going to be out of coffee!), but wow if I never see snow again, it will be too soon!

*Speaking of all of this evil winter weather - this is the 2nd month in a row I've had to miss the thrift store's bag sale! Probably a good thing since I still have a TON of clothes sitting around waiting to be made into something new and awesome, but still, not going makes me sad.

*I've been selling some things on my little town's Facebook yard sale group in an attempt to a) get rid of things and b) make some extra money to put towards moving back to FL. I've been pricing things quite low in an attempt to sell them quickly, but I've run into so much frustration with the first few items I put up. People are wanting me to drive 15-30 minutes to meet up with them, when the item they're buying is like $3-5. Oh, sure, let me spend more on gas than you're paying me! That sounds great! At least now I know to specify! Have you guys ever sold stuff on those groups? How do you handle it?

*That's pretty much it for this week! Being snowed in takes away having much to talk about. I can't even tell you guys how much I look forward to moving home and being able to blog about things like Disney adventures and beach trips!

Zubie: Driving Peace of Mind

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Zubie for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

One of the top things on my "must do before moving back to Orlando" list is to get my car in great shape. It's in good condition for being 10 years old, but there are a lot of small things that I need to pay more attention to before setting off to drive 1,000 miles across the country with a car full of cats and almost everything I own. (I'm totally a "drive around with the gas light on half the time" person, and I'm a little scared to look at the sticker that tells me how long it's been since my last oil change.) I know I should be better at keeping up with that stuff, but it always feels like too much of a hassle and I put it off. (Plus - totally not a fun thing to spend money on!)

I've been reading up on a service called Zubie that I was contacted about blogging about. Basically, they send you a device that plugs into your car and does handy things like monitor your engine health and battery levels, and tells you what the error/"check engine" messages you're getting mean. My favorite part is that it will even give you an estimate for what the repair should cost if somethings wrong - awesome info to be armed with when you go to the garage!

It also has location services you can use, which could come in handy if you're on a road trip with other cars and want to keep track of each other, or if you have new to driving teenagers that you want to monitor. (It can also provide feedback about things like sudden acceleration and hard braking, so you can know if they're being unsafe on the road!) Given all of the crazy winter weather we've had this year, I thought that the feature that can let someone know when you've made it to work/home would be awesome for eliminating some worry!

You can order today with code SAVE20FEB and SAVE 20% on your Zubie key plus one year of service. (Offer good through March 31, 2014. Shipping charges apply.) I think it would be an awesome gift for a new driver, someone about to go on a road trip, a Valentine's gift for your partner who always seems to have car problems, or a fun new gadget for your tech-loving friend who loves trying out the newest thing.

For more info, you can find Zubie on Facebook and on Twitter!

The Blogmopolitan Quiz!

I'm a few days late to this party, but Erin from Two Thirds Hazel has a super fun linkup going around where you download this snazzy quiz template (modeled after the ones they ask celebrties in Cosmo - rmember Cosmo?!) and then fill it out. If you're me, you give up on even *trying* to get the words anywhere near the lines in any kind of neat manner really fast. Sorry about it.

If you want to join in, the post with the template and linkup is here!

7 Jaw Dropping Oscars Red Carpet Looks (and a few fashion fails)

Oscars red carpet is just different. Each awards show has its own personality - you see the funky fashions come out for the MTV awards, the Grammys tend to be pretty all over the place, but the Oscars are where the super elegant, top notch designer gowns make their appearances. I feel like the challenge with picking a red carpet dress for this show is to keep things classy without going boring.

This post is full of giant images, so I am totally doing one of those "click here to read more!" cut things! (If you followed a direct link to this post, you get to save one entire click of your mouse! Celebrate!)

Milan Fashion Week Favorites - Part 1

The Oscars are on tonight, and I'm pretty excited because a) pretty dresses and b) U2 are performing! (Squee!) Until then, I'm taking a little time to catch up on Milan Fashion Week. I've barely scratched the surface of looking at shows, and I'm already totally blown away. Here are my favorites so far!

OMG, this Alberta Ferretti collection, y'all. That dress? Those are feathers. All of it. She did such an impressive job of evoking her forest inspiration in a non-literal way. (Well, mostly non-literal. She did go all hipster and put a bird on a lot of things.) The overall earthiness appealed to my hippie sensibilities.

Her use of this design/fabric was one of my favorite things. This one feels like moonlight on water to me.

Sure, Macklemore may have asked what you know about rockin' the wolf on your noggin, but the question at this Antonia Marras show seems to be more about rockin' the wolf on your skirt. Or your dress.

Or your super weird oversized sweater. You know how Mrs. Weasley always sent the boys sweaters for Christmas at Hogwarts? Do you think that this is the kind of thing that Lupin's mom sent when he was in school?

Sometimes I just like to post pictures of pretty dresses. This one is by Blumarine. (Given how cold it has been lately, how much would you LOVE to have a giant cape thing like this to wrap up in?!)

I also absolutely love this look (also Blumarine) - just everything about how it comes together. The lines hit her body perfectly, but it has that casual "Oh, I just wrapped this pretty fabric around my waist" effortless vibe.

Dolce and Gabbana is at least the 3rd fairy tale-inspired collection I've seen this season, but I'm still not tired of the theme. I am in LOVE with these armor boots! I want these so much.

Glorious.

The handbag for this look is pretty badass, too. I can imagine those sides being made of dragon scales. Looks like it's full of secrets.

Loved these boots, too. No idea what I'd wear them with, but omg so pretty. I was surprised how many flats there were in this collection!

Love, love, love this Emiliio Pucci gown! It's kind of genius! I want to try making something inspired by this!!

The back - stunning!

Okay, I've hit that "whole lotta images" point, so I'm breaking here! More awesome things soon!
